Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
